8:30pm - Tautuktavuk (What We See) DIR. CAROL KUNNUK & LUCY TULUGARJUK, 2023, NUNAVUT | 82 MIN

Taking place in the onset of the COVID 19 Pandemic, Tautuktavuk (What We See) follows the intersecting stories of two sisters, Saqpinak and Uyarak, who are played by co-directors Kunnuk & Tulugarjuk. Saqpinak lives in their home community of Igloolik surrounded by family and land-based cultural practice, while younger sister Uyarak lives in the urban centre of Montréal.

Shot in cinéma vérité style that transitions between scenes from their home lives in Igloolik and Montréal and online visits between the sisters as they encounter the realities of the pandemic and isolation, in this solitude, haunting memories of abuse re-emerge for younger sister Uyarak. Saqpinak does her best to support her through this and reminds Uyarak she is loved. Saqpinak hosts a TV show in Igloolik that shows Inuit practicing their cultural dances, songs and harvesting practices under the restrictions of the pandemic. Uyarak makes a trip home to Igloolik to confront her memories and reconnect with her family and land. Saqpinak reveals a secret that brings the sisters closer together - VFF.

“This unique blending of documentary and reality elements creates a very subtle storyline that contrasts the vast open landscape and the secrets or traumas that are hidden individuals that they have to keep held in. Highly recommended” - Zach McCann-Armitage, ALFF Programming member

In Inuktitut with English subtitles.
