Born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon, Jamie Phillips-Freedman began taking piano lessons at the age of seven. His first teacher was Cheryl Wishart. Later, he began lessons with Joyce Klassen and theory lessons with Henry Klassen. In his last two years of high school, Jamie studied with Dr. Yoomi Kim of the Victoria Conservatory. Jamie has participated in many summer music programs including the Orford Academy, the Victoria Conservatory Summer Academy, the Valhalla Summer School of Music and the Domaine Forget Summer Academy. He has also participated in many festivals, winning awards in the Whitehorse Rotary Music Festival, the Mid Island Performing Arts Festival, the Madeleine Till Open Performance Competition and the 2019 and 2021 CFMTA National Piano Competition. Most recently, Jamie was a finalist in the Rudolf Serkin Piano Competition and was selected to play in a masterclass given by pianist Alexander Kobrin. Currently, Jamie is studying piano performance with Professor Angela Cheng at Oberlin Conservatory and mathematics at Oberlin College. He also benefited from a semester of lessons with Professor Alvin Chow. Jamie is an avid chamber musician and currently plays in a piano trio. In his free time, he likes to play soccer, squash, basketball and chess. He also enjoys running and reading.
