‘Songs of Small Resistance’ is a collection of songs written by composer/pianist Daniel Janke over the past few years. Most of the songs were written for other singers, and for film, television or theatre productions.

Daniel is mostly known as an instrumental composer and jazz pianist. This is his first release of songs that he sings himself. The release concert features the original band on the LP. The album is available on vinyl and includes a download card.

Daniel Janke is a Canadian composer, jazz pianist, and media artist. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and grew up in Ontario, Canada. Early piano studies were with the Royal Conservatory of music. Daniel completed a masters degree in ethnomusicology at York University, Toronto. He studied kora with Jali Nyama Suso, and with Yan Kuba Saho, in Gambia, West Africa.

This new album is his first release of songs that he sings himself. The release concert features the original band on the LP. The album is available on vinyl and includes a download card.

Daniel performs and records with his group WinterTrio, and is artistic director of the community-based Problematic Orchestra.

Recent music commissions include: Border Crossing [Blythewood Wind Quintet, 2018]; Snow Falls Eventually [NAC Orchestra 2017];Small Song for Orchestra [Toronto Symphony Orchestra, 2017]; String Quartet No. 1 [Penderecki String Quartet].

Film scores by Daniel Janke include: Sovereign Soil [NFB, dir. David Curtis, 2019]; Mountain of Sgaana [NFB, dir. Chris Auchter. 2017]; Subconscious Password [NFB, dir. Chris Landreth – short-listed for a 2014 Oscar Award]; and Touch [Rebel Films, dir. Jeremy Podeswa, 2001].
