Motherload is a new dark comedy about contemporary parenting created collectively by four prominent Canadian theatre artists and mothers (Emelia Symington Fedy, Juno Rinaldi, Jody-Kay Marklew and Sonja Bennett) and directed by Steven Drover (Rumble Productions) A modern take on a timeless theme, these artists use overheard conversations from playgrounds and parent friendly cafe’s, their own Iphone videos and candid shots of their dirty kids, welcoming you into their life, mess and all. By taking on their most important role yet- motherhood; the actors bare the most vulnerable parts of their mothering experience by exploring loss of identity, post partum depression, “competitive mommying” and the isolation that goes along with joining the world’s biggest club. The heart of the piece lies in the strength of simple storytelling and like parenting itself, hilarity and celebration always remains at the centre of the piece. As these four women share their stories of the beautiful and sometimes brutal metamorphosis into motherhood - one watching her own mother die as she has her first child, one dealing with anger as losing her career, one learning how “being the perfect mom” is killing her and one finally asking for help- they hope to lighten the collective load.
