In celebration of the Junction Artist in Residence program, August 12-14 will see the village of Haines Junction transform into a buzzing hub for all ages. Held at the Daku Cultural Centre, both outside and in, this festival will bring together artists from across the Yukon Territory to showcase Yukon’s contributions to the world of fashion. Featuring in-depth workshops, hands-on experiences, engaging activities for kids, a bustling craft market, interpretive walks, and more, the Haines Junction Craft Workshop Weekend will display the talents of many and will inspire the creative minds of all those who take part.

Workshops:

Throughout the weekend, artists from across the territory will be offering in-depth workshops in their field. These varied workshops will both serve to introduce newcomers to the creation of unique fashion pieces, as well as to encourage the introduction of new mediums and boundary pushing for those already acquainted with certain fashion techniques. Our instructors have come to us from across the Territory with extensive backgrounds in both creating their own art, and instructing others. From Pattern Drafting and Origami to Creating your own Fabric to Porcupine Quill Work (and everything in between), each workshop challenges its students to discover new forms while also encouraging participants to embrace elements of the North in their unique fashion pieces. Kids Activities:

With youth workshops ranging from First Nations Dancing to Children’s Costume Design, there is sure to be something fun happening for the young (or young at heart). Throughout all three days, there will be multiple workshops taking place that are designed just for kids! Our instructors all have an extensive background working with youth in the arts and are excited to share their skills and enthusiasm with a new generation. Introduce your children to a new skill and passion over the course of a wonderful day under the Northern sun.

Craft Market:

All weekend long, artists will be displaying their impeccable wares for all to see (and buy). Be sure to come by and check out some of the amazing pieces that artists have been creating right here in the Yukon! The craft market is also a wonderful opportunity to chat with participating artists and workshop instructors. Come be a part of our community, and see what we have to offer.

Craft Market Hours of Operation: Friday, August 12: 12:00 – 6:00pm Saturday, August 13: 9:00am – 7:00pm Sunday, August 14: 9:00am – 2:00pm

Interpretive Walks and Side Program:

Stop by the festival and experience a number of great things happening for those with a few minutes, or a few days, to spare. The Haines Junction Craft Workshop Weekend will be host to street art and music for all to enjoy, cozy evening campfires, and even a 3D costume photo booth! There will also be regular Nature Interpretive Walks through the surrounding area. Hear from others about how this very area translates into the inspiration for local artists. Walk leaders will also be discussing the land and its traditional use – such as the foraging of medicinal plants and traditional uses of several natural features.

Staying In Haines Junction :

Welcome to our community! In Haines Junction you will find the beauty of Kluane National Park at your doorstep, but we have even more to offer. Stop by the Village Bakery for a scrumptious breakfast and a little town gossip to start off your day. With the Market Fair open at the festival, you will find lots of great local art, however don’t forget to check out some of our local studios and the well-loved Acacia Vintage.
